Disney has unveiled a sneak peek of the live-action version of Lilo and Stitch, and while it’s intriguing, it’s a touch awkward.
Just last week, we were treated to a preview of another animated favorite getting the live-action treatment—How to Train Your Dragon. Now, Disney has joined the remake bandwagon, dropping a 30-second teaser of their own. In this brief clip, Stitch amusingly pretends to be Godzilla, demolishing a sandcastle styled after the iconic Disney castle, along with some other sand creations. Aside from a moment at the end where our CGI friend interacts with some text, confirming the release date as May 23, 2025, there isn’t much to unpack just yet. It’s a simple first glimpse, really.
The official synopsis for the film sticks closely to the original, describing the story of Lilo and Stitch as the bond formed between a lonely human girl and a dog-like alien engineered for destruction. Chris Sanders, the original director, is reprising his role as the voice of Stitch, while Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, takes the helm as director.
As for the cast, newcomer Maia Kealoha is stepping into the role of Lilo, with Sydney Agudong from On My Block playing her big sister Nani. Comedic talent Zach Galifianakis, famous for The Hangover, lends his voice to Jumba. Billy Magnussen, who you might know from Game Night, will voice Pleakley. Hannah Waddingham, whom we’ve loved in Ted Lasso, is also part of the cast, though her character has not been officially revealed. Still, you could wager she’s likely taking on the role of the Grand Councilwoman.
With the release less than a year away, a full trailer is probably on the horizon. Meanwhile, Disney is gearing up to rake in some serious cash this holiday season with the release of Moana 2, hitting theaters this week.
