Merciless As The Sea
Meet Portia Maye, before she transformed into the dreaded Houndmaster. Her story begins with a promising life fueled by love and adventure on the sea, under her father’s guidance. That idyllic life met a grim fate when Mad Molak, a merciless pirate, attacked her father’s ship, Nightsdream, leaving a trail of bloodshed.
Spared for her navigational skills, Portia’s yearning for revenge became her guiding star. Her relentless pursuit of vengeance led her down a dark path, steering her father’s ship right into Dragon’s Tooth’s treacherous waters, claiming her foes to the depths. Miraculously – or not – she was the only one to survive, except for a loyal pup named Snug.
Once the epitome of survival, Portia not only lived through the massacre but endured isolation on Dragon’s Tooth. However, her thoughts were consumed by revenge, and her thirst for it only grew fiercer with time.
The Dragon’s Tooth, unknown to her, was a Bleed – a place where realms overlap. Think of it as colors blending on a canvas, where dimensions touch and mix.
According to Lead Narrative Director Jessi Thind, "That’s the thing about being in a Bleed. If it doesn’t kill you, it can drive you mad.”
Her downward spiral into madness matched her escalating prowess for violence, turning her into a Killer whose ferocity overshadowed even Molak. By the time she exacted her revenge, her fate within The Entity’s realm was firmly sealed.
Snug, her sole tether to humanity, plays a significant role in The Houndmaster’s Power, assisting in tracking and capturing Survivors, reflecting their unbreakable bond.
For The Black Talon
Taurie Cain was brought up in the Black Talon faction, a subgroup of the sinister Black Vale, devoting her life to unveiling The Entity’s secrets. Her curiosity took a tragic turn when her parents vanished into a Bleed for research, prompting Taurie to follow.
From that moment, she committed herself to this sinister cause, rising swiftly through the Black Talon’s ranks. Unlike other Survivors, Taurie actively sought darkness, convinced The Entity held the secret to surpassing human limits.
Jessi Thind elaborates, “Being raised in the Black Talon, Taurie genuinely sees her actions as noble for humanity’s advancement. Yet, as her standing improved, her world grew darker, until she reached an irreversible junction.”
In a decisive moment, tasked with sacrificing Jordan Rois – an opponent of her organization – she hesitated before delivering the fatal blow. This hesitation was one of her final acts before entering The Fog.
Her convictions were swiftly challenged when faced with the harsh realities of The Entity’s realm. Despite the revelations of endless agony, Taurie remains defiant, believing her true purpose isn’t fully realized.
“Her loyalty to the Vale might be advantageous in The Fog, retaining faith in a larger design," explains Thind. "Taurie is resolved to persist until The Entity acknowledges her as a Killer.”
A question lingers – why did The Entity choose Taurie as a Survivor instead of a Killer initially?
Thind rationalizes, "The Entity feeds off emotions for unknown reasons. Perhaps it chose Taurie sensing a potential advantage in her presence, letting friction arise with other Survivors who lack similar faith, fueling conflict and disharmony – prime sustenance for The Entity."
However the dynamics unfold, Taurie is determined to thrive, leveraging her Perks to distance herself from allies, attracting the Killer’s gaze and turning pain into power.
It’s fascinating that both Portia and Taurie have navigated the Bleeds, yet their fates diverge significantly from each other. Were circumstances different, they might have switched roles in The Entity’s ominous realm. But once a path is chosen, there’s no turning back, especially when it’s veiled by Fog.
