Just as everyone anticipated, the prestigious Game of the Year title at The Game Awards was snagged by a widely adored AAA game: Astro Bot, a choice that felt both safe and well-deserved. However, 2024 saw an indie game emerge as a formidable challenger: Balatro, the standout roguelike deck-builder from LocalThunk, developed single-handedly. Riding high on its massive critical acclaim, Balatro managed to sweep the indie categories at the TGAs and unsurprisingly dominated the indie scene. Ultimately, it clinched the Game of the Year trophy at the 2024 Indie Game Awards, a recognition many believed it truly earned.
Thankfully, the 2024 Indie Game Awards, with its diverse panel of publications, indie gaming personalities, and industry insiders, highlighted several other exceptional titles that the TGAs overlooked. This inclusivity brought well-deserved recognition to games like 1000xResist, Animal Well, and Thank Goodness You’re Here. Yet, it was a tad disappointing to see UFO 50 snubbed once again.
For those disheartened by the blockbuster-heavy winners at the TGAs, the Indie Game Awards offered a refreshing list of champions. Let’s take a closer look:
