An experienced analyst has suggested that if the Nintendo Switch 2 hits the market in the first half of 2025, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) might surpass it in terms of sales in the U.S. industry expert Mat Piscatella from Circana has also forecasted that the Switch 2’s launch will face several months of supply shortages due to the anticipated high demand for this next-generation console.
### Can PS5 Outdo Switch 2 Sales in the U.S. Given Adequate Supply?
Piscatella hasn’t gone into great detail about why he believes the PS5 will outperform the Switch 2 in its debut year, attributing this mainly to supply limitations and possibly a later release in 2025. It’s interesting to consider what might happen if Nintendo manages to avoid any significant hardware production setbacks.
It’s undeniably an ambitious prediction, especially since the PS5 is already in the latter stages of its lifecycle. However, if Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) launches this year, it could lead to a notable increase in the demand for Sony’s console.
“I expect Nintendo’s upcoming device to sell 4.3 million units in the U.S. by 2025 (assuming a first-half launch), which would account for roughly one-third of all video game console hardware units sold that year, not including PC portables,” Piscatella stated on the social media platform Bluesky. “However, the number of units sold will naturally depend on the manufacturing capabilities and decisions. Despite this, I still believe the PlayStation 5 will lead in overall hardware units sold in the U.S. throughout the year.”
