Earlier today, FuturLab announced that they are bringing an end to PowerWash Simulator’s VR support on the Quest platform. The news came directly from CEO Kirsty Rigden, who explained that while they’re big fans of VR, the current economics of supporting the platform don’t add up. The costs outweigh the returns.
Rigden expressed their ongoing enthusiasm for VR, suggesting that they might revisit supporting it someday. However, for now, the VR team has been reassigned to new projects within the company. The primary reason for this shift, as Rigden conveyed, is to ensure job security for their talented team, indicating that a return to VR support appears unlikely in the foreseeable future.
For those interested in the details, here’s the complete statement from Kirsty Rigden:
“It’s with a heavy heart that I share we won’t be continuing our support for PowerWash Simulator VR at this time. We still have a passion for VR and hope to support it again someday, but our current circumstances don’t allow us to continue right now.
We’ve faced a difficult decision. Our amazing VR team was working on a platform that costs more to maintain than it brings in, all while other projects have pressing vacancies. The logical move was to redirect our VR team’s efforts elsewhere. While I’d love to see PowerWash Simulator thriving on every possible platform, safeguarding my team’s livelihoods takes precedence. Many of you might feel disappointed, but I believe you’d come to the same conclusion if you were in my shoes.”
While the team’s decision might sadden some VR enthusiasts, the standard version of the game isn’t slowing down. It’s still buzzing with fresh content like the Shrek DLC and the upcoming Wallace & Gromit Pack. However, Quest users haven’t seen new updates since the Alice’s Adventures Special Pack release in June. Before this, PowerWash Simulator VR had enjoyed a host of updates and crossovers, from the Muckingham Files to SpongeBob SquarePants and even Back to the Future.
As for what’s available now, both PowerWash Simulator VR and the existing DLCs will remain accessible on the Meta Quest platform, with no intention of removing them anytime soon.
