BioWare, the renowned game developer, has seen its team shrink to fewer than 100 employees. This information comes from a Bloomberg report, highlighting a dramatic reduction in team size over the past couple of years. At one point, BioWare employed over 200 individuals, but recent changes have drastically reduced that number.
The significant drop in staff correlates with recent layoffs as the studio refines its focus on the forthcoming installment of the Mass Effect series. Notable departures due to this shift include writer Trick Weekes and producer Jenn Cheverie, among others. These changes are part of a broader strategy where some BioWare personnel have been temporarily assigned to other Electronic Arts studios.
There seems to have been some confusion among staff regarding these assignments. Many employees believed they were temporary; however, it appears these roles might be more permanent than initially thought.
In addressing these organizational changes, BioWare’s general manager Gary McKay explained, “At this development phase, we don’t need full support from the entire studio. We have exceptional talent at BioWare, and over recent months, we’ve worked hard to align many of our colleagues with other EA teams offering roles that suit their skills.”
