Valve has introduced a new feature on Steam Early Access to inform users if a game hasn’t been updated in over a year. This change, which was picked up by SteamDB, adds a visible warning message to the game’s Early Access developer Q&A section. This message provides consumers with the date of the last update for the project.
Alongside this, Valve has incorporated details about this update into Steamworks for complete transparency. According to Valve, “If a game has not seen an update or an ‘update’ type event within a year, we will place a note on the store page—right above the Developer Questionnaire—so players are aware that the game hasn’t been updated recently.”
The notice is triggered by one of two conditions: either more than 12 months have passed since a build was assigned to the ‘default’ branch in Steamworks, or more than 12 months have elapsed since a developer communicated an update event—be it a Major Update, Regular Update, or Patch Notes—to the players.
Since its inception, the Early Access program has hosted titles that developers sometimes abandon entirely. By implementing this feature, Valve aims to increase transparency and manage player expectations regarding the status of these games.
