The recent surge in PSVR 2 sales over the holiday season on Amazon US was quite remarkable, exceeding expectations by a long shot, with figures showing almost a fivefold increase compared to last year.
This impressive jump in sales can be attributed primarily to the generous discounts during Black Friday and the holiday season. The Horizon bundle of the PSVR 2 headset saw its price slashed by a notable 42%, bringing it down from $550 to a more tempting $350 for US buyers.
It’s no surprise that such a massive price reduction would lead to increased sales, but the extent of this growth was unexpected. During the 2024 holiday season, PSVR 2 managed to sell nearly five times the number of units as it did in the previous year on Amazon US.
To provide some context, last year’s holiday season didn’t feature any significant discounts for PSVR 2. Generally, when you halve the price of a product, a proportional sales increase seems logical. However, in this scenario, the relationship between price cut and sales boost for the PSVR 2 proved to be much more dynamic.
Initiated before Black Friday, Sony’s extended sale pushed well into the following year, hinting at potential strategic motives. There’s speculation that the company was offloading inventory, perhaps in anticipation of a new SKU like a redesigned bundle or a more budget-friendly version. Although some have speculated that this might indicate waning confidence from Sony in the PSVR 2, considering a clearance before potential discontinuation, it seems more plausible that Sony intends to continue its offerings at least through the current console generation. Even if the headset doesn’t take center stage in their lineup, it’s likely to stick around for a while yet.
