Speculation surrounding AMD’s development of a Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card with 32 GB of memory has been put to rest by the company. Frank Azor, from AMD, has confirmed there are no plans for such a release, directly addressing the chatter that originated from a leaker on Chiphell. Previously, it was suggested that a 32 GB variant was on the horizon, intended more for the ‘Gaming’ series rather than the PRO lineup.
However, AMD’s Frank Azor took to Techpowerup’s X post to set the record straight, saying: “No, the 9070 XT card is not coming in 32 GB capacity.”
The announced Radeon RX 9070 XT will feature 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Given the GPU’s expected performance, it wouldn’t significantly benefit from a 32 GB version, especially in gaming contexts. Despite rumors suggesting the larger capacity targeted AI tasks while also maintaining gaming capabilities, AMD has traditionally refrained from releasing gaming GPUs with such high memory. It doesn’t make logistical sense to equip a mid-to-high range GPU with 32 GB of memory when it can’t effectively use all that power.
Looking at the RDNA 4 series, the RX 9070 XT seems to be the flagship model powered by the Navi 48 GPU, and it’s implausible that any card in this lineup will exceed the 16 GB memory spec. Other anticipated models, like the RX 9070 and those based on Navi 44, are expected to have lower specifications and, consequently, less potential performance.
AMD is gearing up for the official unveiling of the RX 9000 series on February 28th, promising to reveal comprehensive specifications, pricing, and performance benchmarks. This launch will closely coincide with NVIDIA’s anticipated release of the GeForce RTX 5070 GPU. Frank Azor previously noted that AMD’s 70-class GPUs are positioned to rival NVIDIA’s comparable offerings, sparking interest in how they will compare against NVIDIA’s upcoming RTX 5070 Ti and RX 5070. The competition in this segment is set to heat up as we see these products hit the market in early March.
