While Xbox Game Pass often steals the spotlight as a great value in gaming, Sony’s PlayStation Plus deserves its own share of the limelight. It’s not just about the monthly games available on the Essential tier; when you dive into PS Plus Extra and Premium subscriptions, there’s the impressive Games Catalog featuring a range of top-notch PS4 and PS5 games. For those who opt for the Premium tier, there’s even more to explore with the Classics Catalog, offering beloved PS1 and PS2 games at no extra cost. This approach seems to be paying off, as Sony has noted a rise in revenue linked to users opting for these higher-tier subscriptions.
Recently, Sony shared some compelling insights from its third-quarter financial report for the fiscal year 2024, highlighting a 20% increase in revenue compared to the previous year. The surge, they suggest, largely comes from players upgrading to the more extensive PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers.
The report quotes, “As for PlayStation Plus, revenue in the quarter increased 20% year-on-year on a U.S. dollar basis, primarily due to an increase in average revenue per user (‘ARPU’) mainly due to a shift to higher tiers of service and the impact of price revisions.”
It’s no wonder players are being drawn to these higher tiers, considering the quality of games that have recently been added to the Games Catalog for Extra and Premium members. During Sony’s recent State of Play event, they made waves by announcing that the critically acclaimed action-adventure game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be joining the service on February 18. Alongside this, the anticipated narrative adventure game, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, will also debut on PS Plus on the same day. Meanwhile, for fans of the Classics Catalog, the much-loved PSP game Patapon 3 is set to make its appearance for Premium users, much to the delight of long-time fans.
