Sony has officially addressed the lawsuit brought by Christopher Barrett, a former member of Bungie’s team.
In a recent legal document, highlighted by Game File, Sony has laid out text messages that they claim demonstrate Barrett’s inappropriate behavior involving female colleagues at Bungie.
Barrett parted ways with Bungie back in March 2024, with allegations later surfacing that pointed to misconduct involving female team members under his supervision. Following these events, Barrett initiated a legal battle alleging wrongful dismissal and sought damages totaling $200 million. He argues that his departure blocked him from receiving a $45 million payout tied to Sony’s acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
Sony’s legal filing underscores their stance that Barrett’s termination was a result of allegedly inappropriate interactions. They describe him targeting a female employee who wasn’t directly under his supervision. It began as casual conversation but reportedly escalated to Barrett making subtle comments about her appearance and expressing romantic interest, pushing professional boundaries.
These documents from Sony also include excerpts from Barrett’s messages sent to the women involved.
Barrett’s legal team fired back through Game File, criticizing Sony for their selective presentation of the evidence. “Sony chooses to selectively present messages and alleged discussions, making broad statements without backing them up, to tarnish Christopher’s name and justify his termination to avoid honoring their financial commitments,” they argued.
They further contended, “It’s notable that Sony avoids providing full context of these text exchanges. None of their claims establish a valid legal reason to dismiss Christopher.”
“Christopher remains confident that, once all evidence is reviewed, it will reveal Sony’s plan to remove him and strip away the rewards he earned over his dedicated 25-year career with the company.”
