He promised he’d return, and indeed he has. More than three decades after “Terminator 2” captivated audiences, an indie game designer has taken us back in time with “Terminator 2D: No Fate,” an action-packed side-scroller inspired by the famed sequel directed by James Cameron.
Movie-based games have always been a hit-or-miss affair, and you don’t encounter them too often these days. However, one ambitious developer believes they’ve cracked the code with “Terminator 2D: No Fate.” This retro side-scrolling game is crafted to pay homage to the 1991 action film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Bitmap Bureau, the creative minds behind the game, describe it as, “A love letter to the arcade games of the 80s and 90s, capturing the spirit of the T2 game we always wished we had as kids.” Judging by the trailer, they just might have hit the nail on the head.
Now, that doesn’t mean we didn’t enjoy the slew of other Terminator 2 games. Bethesda’s take, “The Terminator,” certainly absorbed an unhealthy chunk of our time. However, many official T2 games felt more like hitting the fast-forward button on the movie.
Bitmap Bureau intends to capture the entire film experience, bringing the authentic essence of a 90s arcade game to life with the robust capabilities of a modern PC. For instance, the nail-biting truck chase alone is nothing short of spectacular.
Adding to the game’s intrigue is its promise of multiple endings. Just like James Cameron’s original masterpiece, which has two different conclusions based on which version you watch, we’re eagerly anticipating a scenario where John Connor plunges into molten iron, potentially triggering a cataclysmic paradox.
We’ll have to curb our enthusiasm until September 5th, though, as that’s when “Terminator 2D: No Fate” hits the shelves.
