Another knock-off of Apple’s Vision Pro is about to hit the market, and it’s notable that even its name carries the ‘Vision’ tag.
Meet Vivo, a company from China that might not be famous worldwide but is certainly making waves with its sensible, mid-range smartphones. They’ve earned their place among the top five smartphone manufacturers by market share.
Today, at the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan Province, Vivo made an intriguing leap into the extended reality (XR) world with their new device, the Vivo Vision.
In their press release, Vivo shared that this development is part of their larger strategy to explore both robotics and XR technology. They describe the Vivo Vision as “a significant milestone in vivo’s exploration of mixed reality technology.”
A glimpse of the Vivo Vision was available at the Boao Forum, but there’s still a lot we don’t know. Details about its specifications, operating system, release timeline, global availability, and pricing remain a mystery. So far, we just have a look at the external design.
Vivo’s booth did, however, feature a model of the device, showing off some noticeable design similarities to the Apple Vision Pro. These include the distinctive headstrap, digital crown button, and a magnetically-attached external battery.
Typically, Vivo’s smartphones operate on modified Android software. They use Funtouch OS for the global market and Origin OS for devices sold within China.
Considering this is Vivo’s first venture into XR territory, there’s speculation that they might attempt to integrate Google’s upcoming Android XR OS. This is also expected to debut with Samsung’s mixed reality project, ‘Project Moohan,’ later this year, though nothing is confirmed yet.
This move by Vivo follows a noticeable trend of Vision Pro replicas from Chinese manufacturers. Earlier in the year, Play for Dream made a splash at CES 2025 with their mixed reality headset – a device that drew commendation from former Quest engineer Amanda Watson, who described it as “absolutely the best all-around HMD demo I saw on the floor today.”
