Back in 2006, when Bethesda launched The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, it quickly caught the attention of gamers with its expansive open world, diverse range of quests, and a myriad of character-building options—whether through magic, melee, or archery. These aspects were certainly a step ahead of its competitors. However, Oblivion also gained a reputation for its charmingly awkward moments. The game had its fair share of funny glitches, odd NPC interactions, quirky voice acting, and unpredictable physics that left players in stitches.
For years, the gaming community has reminisced about Oblivion’s peculiar charm, reflected in countless memes and YouTube compilations, such as those on Bacon_’s channel. Therefore, when Bethesda, in collaboration with Virtuos Games, stealthily launched Oblivion Remastered this week, I was both excited and anxious. What would happen to the game’s beloved comedic glitches that added so much character to it back then?
To my delight, just hours after its release, it became evident that Oblivion Remastered managed to enhance the visuals and mechanics while retaining all the quirky elements that fans loved. A quick browse through the top posts in the Oblivion subreddit reveals that those amusing moments are still alive and well. My personal favorite is a meme by Bacon_ that was re-created seven years after its original release in the newly remastered game.
One standout example is a video from early 2018 that’s amassed a whopping 18 million views on YouTube. It captures an amusing scene where an NPC thief demands 100 Gold from the player, only to turn a blind eye when the player steals it back, claiming it’s “worthless” to him anyway. This exchange perfectly encapsulates the game’s endearing silliness, and I was thrilled to see it replicated exactly in the remaster at the same spot in the game world. While Oblivion Remastered boasts stunning Unreal Engine 5 visuals and more polished combat, it remains true to the original’s whimsical essence.
Additionally, Bacon_ has reimagined another classic clip. This one features Rena Bruiant expressing her affection for dogs, moments before her husband bizarrely attacks one of their beloved pets. In the older clip, his enthusiastic “YEEHAUGH!” was a crowd-pleaser, whereas his reduced “Hough!” in the remake doesn’t quite hit the same mark.
This faithful adherence to the original game’s spirit is undoubtedly a significant factor in why Oblivion Remastered is thriving—especially for younger players experiencing it as a fresh chapter in The Elder Scrolls saga. It’s making waves on Steam and is accessible through Xbox and PC with Xbox Game Pass (but not on PS5). Although it’s priced at $49.99, savvy shoppers can grab the Steam edition for just $41.49 on Fanatical.
