For those of us with a love for exploration in gaming, titles that offer vast universes to explore are hard to resist. It’s no surprise that most of these games fall within the sci-fi genre—it’s simply a natural fit for creating diverse worlds for us to navigate. The trick with these games, however, is finding the right balance. No one wants to meander aimlessly through an empty galaxy that’s large for the sake of being large. Conversely, an overwhelming amount of pointless tasks just to appear busy isn’t appealing either. When developers hit the sweet spot, we’re in for an unforgettable gaming adventure. Enter Cubic Odyssey, our main focus today, which promises to take us on a brand-new journey.
Developed by Atypical Games and published by Gaijin Entertainment, Cubic Odyssey is an adventure that kicks off with a crash landing on a distant planet. From there, players will engage in mining resources and refining materials to craft tools, outposts, and vehicles. The ultimate goal? To build starships that facilitate free exploration throughout the galaxy.
In Cubic Odyssey, each star in the sky anchors a star system teeming with planets to explore. Every one of these planets hosts unique ecosystems and experiences dynamic day and night cycles. You’ll come across bustling cities filled with NPCs, pirate outposts, and treacherous ruins that are ripe for exploration. The grand mission is to thwart the Red Darkness, a galactic scourge that mutates wildlife, devours planets, and threatens all life forms.
The game’s travel options are seamless whether you’re on the ground, in the air, or in space. You can warp between star systems or speed between planets. On the terrain, you’ll hop on speeders to traverse alien landscapes and set foot in subterranean ruins and secretive spots. The game is designed to accommodate whatever level of exploration you crave.
For those who’d prefer not to tackle these adventures alone, Cubic Odyssey offers a co-op mode where you can team up with other explorers. Bring your talents together to tackle gigantic enemies, launch orbital strikes, or construct massive collaborative structures. Players eager to enjoy this experience with friends will find plenty to look forward to.
“We plan on creating an expansive open world where every planet, every system, and every moment is yours to shape,” says Andrei Lopata, CEO of the Bucharest-based Atypical Games.
Cubic Odyssey is shaping up to be a thrill for anyone who revels in the constant flow of activities. If you’re excited by the vastness of space, this game is projected to land on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S later this year. Keep an eye out for more details as we get closer to the release of what looks to be an intriguing adventure.
