Get ready to rev your engines, as Days Gone Remastered hits the PlayStation 5 on April 25. This definitive edition has been polished up to take full advantage of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, with a host of new modes and enhancements. Not only is it launching on PlayStation, but PC gamers will also get to join in the fun through the Broken Road DLC, which features exciting new game modes like Horde Assault, Permadeath, and Speedrun. Whether you’re exploring this apocalypse-ridden world for the first time or hopping back onto your trusty Drifter bike, there’s always something fresh to uncover. For a deeper dive into what’s new, check out our announcement blog.
One of the standouts in this remaster is the intense Horde Assault mode—a survival arcade challenge that’s sure to test your gaming mettle. Before we break it down, take a moment to enjoy the trailer we’ve put together for this thrilling new feature.
What’s the Deal with Horde Assault Mode?
Horde Assault introduces an exhilarating way to experience gameplay, pushing players to achieve high scores while dealing with ramped-up horde sizes and formidable foes like Breakers, Reachers, and those fearsome Rager bears. As you navigate this tough and ever-evolving terrain, the difficulty of enemies increases the longer you manage to stay alive. Built on the promise of "This World Comes For You," it brings the core essence of Days Gone’s open world to life in an action-packed way. Get ready, because this never-ending mode is your chance to show those Freakers who’s boss.
You kick off Horde Assault armed with only a sidearm, landing in Cascade. From there, your goal is to fight through initial Freaker waves until you can reach your Drifter bike. This ride is crucial for traversing the region. Look out for Supply Boxes scattered around, as they hold better weapons that are essential for survival. There are over 20 weapons to snag, including a flamethrower that’s exclusive to this mode. Plus, what you get from each Supply Box changes with every new start.
As you battle for survival, completing Side Jobs will replenish your resources and add XP to your tally. These small objectives are lifesavers—literally. If you find yourself low on ammo while 800 Freakers are hot on your trail, you’ll quickly understand the necessity of these tasks. And if you manage to survive for 30 minutes, brace yourself for the Ultimate Horde—a relentless wave of enemies with no end in sight. But let’s not give all the details away; you’ll have to see it to believe it.
Survival at Its Core
Climbing levels in Horde Assault comes with exclusive rewards, including never-before-seen character options, new patch designs, and Injectors that significantly alter gameplay. If you’re familiar with Days Gone, you’ll know Injectors from its main narrative. They come into play here in Horde Assault more intensely with Modifier Injectors, which dramatically shake things up: 24 in total, split between 12 Positive and 12 Negative. Positive ones make things harder but boost your score, while Negative ones ease gameplay but hit your score.
While we don’t want to spoil it completely, a couple of Injectors worth mentioning would give you an interesting glimpse. Take the Exploding Freakers Injector, where fallen Freakers explode, giving you an edge when battling larger hordes. Then there’s the Wanted Injector, which maxes your heat level at the start, adding to the challenge as you survive against escalating threats.
Woven into the fabric of Horde Assault is a robust Reward path, featuring 35 levels packed with various perks such as Injectors, character skins, and patch cosmetics. Additionally, six new characters, never before playable in Days Gone, join the fray, including fan-favorite Skizzo. Remember those patches from our 2019 Challenges? They’re back, purely for a visual splash on Deacon’s cut. Fortunately, the benefit of these patches and the Enhanced Photo Mode carries over to the story campaign. There are bonus treasures to unearth by mastering all four regions; one reward, in particular, is highly anticipated involving your bike. But that’s all we’ll say for now.
Horde Assault is crafted as intense end-game content but you don’t have to complete the story to jump in when Days Gone Remastered kicks off. Although, if you’re new, exploring the story first is a great way to get familiar with the game’s combat and mechanics. Expect an added 10 hours of new content to sink your teeth into, enhancing the bustling world of Days Gone with even more thrills and challenges.
