Last January, Ayaneo launched a crowdfunding campaign for its innovative clamshell handheld devices, the Ayaneo Flip DS and Flip KB. These gadgets, powered by AMD Ryzen, quickly attracted attention. We shared our initial thoughts on the Flip DS just a month into the campaign, but unfortunately, the entire production line for this device has been unexpectedly shut down.
Things were looking up for the Flip DS. Initial reviews were positive, and the device’s specs even got upgraded from an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U to the more robust Ryzen 7 8840U. Yet, out of the blue, on February 25, Ayaneo informed supporters that production had ceased. Backers were given until March 27 to decide whether to request a refund or exchange the Flip for another Ayaneo product, though the latter option might involve additional costs.
This turn of events is undoubtedly disappointing for fans and backers eager to try out this new handheld once funding wrapped. Despite the fact that many outlets had already reviewed the Ayaneo Flip units and that some backers received theirs, Ayaneo seems unable to meet the complete demand of its crowdfunding supporters. Typically, Ayaneo has a strong track record with such projects, but this situation underscores a crucial reminder: crowdfunding is an investment, not a purchase assured to arrive on your doorstep.
I find it hard not to lament this outcome. We previously highlighted how the Flip DS appeared to be the ideal modern successor to the beloved Nintendo DS and 3DS.
With its dual-screen setup and impressive internals capable of emulating the Nintendo Switch and running high-end PC games with extra features like multitasking and system tweaking, the Ayaneo Flip DS stood out in the handheld market. At a time when most devices seemed like overpriced variations of the Steam Deck or ROG Ally, the Flip DS offered something genuinely unique.
Alas, not every promising gadget makes it to production. However, there is a silver lining: the few Ayaneo Flip DS and Flip KB models circulating among YouTubers and early adopters could become rare collector’s items. Just be prepared to spend a hefty sum if you want to add one to your collection, as no new ones will be produced.
