If you’re familiar with the British Isles, you might not immediately think of Birmingham as a prime setting for a video game. However, throw it back to the 14th century, add some zombies, and suddenly it becomes a compelling option. That’s the idea behind “God Save Birmingham,” and after catching about eight minutes of fresh gameplay footage, it’s now at the top of my list for upcoming zombie games.
I have to confess, I typically enjoy zombie games where you can team up with others to face massive hordes using wild, over-the-top weapons. Think Call of Duty Zombies or Dead Island 2. That’s why games like Killing Floor 3 and the mysteriously quiet John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando were my top picks for upcoming PC games. But “God Save Birmingham” might have just edged them out.
This isn’t your typical co-op zombie slayer. You won’t be swinging an electrified bat or using a portable jet turbine to take down brain-eaters. Earlier gameplay snippets caught my eye, but the new extended trailer from IGN gives off serious “The Last of Us” vibes with its third-person stealth and satisfying takedown animations. While the story might not reach “TLOU” levels, in terms of zombie combat, it definitely hits the mark.
The game leans heavily on environmental interaction. You can move furniture to barricade doors, use ladders to bridge gaps, and climb onto chairs to reach higher spots. The physics apply to you and the zombies, creating a dynamic and entertaining sandbox experience.
The latest trailer highlights the depth of its survival mechanics. You’ll manage hunger, thirst, fatigue, and even panic with no convenient menu pauses to scarf down food. Injuries like leg damage from falls will slow you down, and you can break down objects for materials. Plus, there’s a comprehensive cooking system.
I think it looks fantastic, especially with its medieval twist on the zombie genre. “God Save Birmingham” doesn’t have a release date yet, but early access is planned.
