You may not want to set high expectations for the initial teaser of the Until Dawn movie, though it does attempt to clarify how it distinguishes itself from the game.
Since its announcement last year, the upcoming Until Dawn film has been shrouded in secrecy. However, a bit more information emerged recently, revealing that the film will introduce brand-new characters and a storyline. This might not sit well with die-hard fans of the original game, as the movie seems to be more of a spiritual successor under the Until Dawn name rather than a faithful adaptation, although Peter Stormare is returning as Dr. Hill. Sony released a not-quite-complete teaser just today, featuring select clips and shedding light on how this movie will diverge from the game.
In the teaser, director David F. Sandberg explains, “One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways. The movie has this mechanic where things start over and they get to try again. Every time they come back to life, it’s like they are in a new horror genre. To survive, they have to make it until dawn.” See what they did there? Like the game’s name! Now, fans who were hoping for a direct adaptation might not be thrilled, but really, how else could one adapt a game that’s famous for its multiple branching pathways and diverse endings?
If you’re still on the fence, Sony did mention that a full trailer is “coming soon.” Given the film’s April 25 release date, just three months away, we can expect that “soon” means pretty soon. In the meantime, let’s hope none of us get caught in a timeloop like the one portrayed in Until Dawn!
