The voice actors involved in the French version of Apex Legends have reportedly taken a stand against a proposal that would have utilized their voices for AI training.
Pascale Chemin, the voice behind Wraith in the French version of this popular battle royale game, shared on Twitter that a clause was added to their contracts by a publisher—likely Electronic Arts. This clause would have seen their work feeding into AI model development. While neither the game nor the publisher were named directly, all signs point towards Apex Legends and EA.
In a show of solidarity, 31 other voice actors from the project also declined to sign the agreement. They collectively penned a letter refusing to comply with the proposed clause.
“If we don’t unite now to ensure there’s a clause safeguarding our voices in our contracts—not just for us, but across all video game dubbing studios—we may never get the protection we need, and it will spell disaster,” Chemin explained, as translated by ResetEra.
She continued, “We aren’t refusing work outright. In this day and age, opportunities are sparse for many of us, and financial struggles are common. Of course, a paycheck would be welcome. However, we’re being asked to relinquish our expertise to train AI systems that could ultimately replace us. It’s asking us to support AI advancements that we fundamentally oppose, which feels like shooting ourselves in the foot.”
