The creative minds behind Gorilla Tag, Another Axiom, have just announced a major update for Orion Drift, their latest release in early access. Since its debut last month, players have been waiting for fresh content, and now it’s here with the introduction of a new mini-game, ‘Capture the Beacon’ (CTB).
Much like capture the flag, CTB focuses on transporting a rod-shaped beacon back to your squad’s base. However, the twist here is that there’s no cap on player numbers or time restrictions. This means anyone can join in on the fun at any point, making it an open invitation for players to dive into the action whenever they please.
While the studio hasn’t spilled all the details about what else is included in the update, they promise there’s much more to explore beyond CTB. Fans won’t have to wait long to find out, as the update is set to go live on March 28th at 10AM PT.
Orion Drift arrived on Quest this February, offering a free early access experience, and instantly utilized Gorilla Tag’s signature locomotion style. Players navigate the expansive space station by pumping their arms, a movement that propels them forward in a unique and engaging way.
In addition to CTB, the game already boasts a variety of activities. Its centerpiece is ‘Drift Ball,’ viewed as a fresh take on the now-discontinued Echo VR. It offers a dynamic, low-gravity handball-like experience that draws players in. Also scattered throughout the diverse districts of the station are mini-games like parkour challenges, which involve Gorilla Tag-style climbing, as well as practice arenas designed to help you perfect your Drift Ball skills. For those inclined towards other sports, there are golf, basketball mini-games, and even lounges to relax and watch games playing out across different arenas.
Currently, the game accommodates up to 75 players per server, but Another Axiom is determined to push that figure up to 200. Expanding the variety of mini-games is a significant move in that direction, although it’s still early days for Orion Drift’s journey.
Despite its engaging, socially-driven gameplay which mirrors that of Gorilla Tag, Orion Drift hasn’t yet captured the same viral wave. As of now, it’s garnered around 3,300 user reviews and hasn’t climbed into the top 50 best-selling Quest titles. Leading the pack in sales are games like Animal Company, Yeeps, and the original Gorilla Tag.
