According to a recent report, Warner Bros. Games has decided to pull the plug on plans for a Hogwarts Legacy expansion, originally slated for 2025. This move comes as the publisher faces financial pressures that have already impacted several projects and studios. Following the monumental success of Hogwarts Legacy in 2023, Warner Bros. was keen on expanding their offerings in the Wizarding World franchise. However, the tepid response to games like Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which didn’t capture much attention after its 2024 release, contributed to a challenging year for the company. Alongside other failed ventures such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus, these struggles have now led to the cancellation of post-launch content for Hogwarts Legacy.
In March 2025, Warner Bros.-Discovery decided to scrap the rumored DLC for Hogwarts Legacy as part of a strategy to restructure Avalanche Software, Bloomberg reports. The executives concluded that the expansion didn’t offer enough value for the proposed price. Additionally, a “Definitive Edition” of the game, which would have included the base game bundled with the DLC, has also been canceled. This DLC was being developed with Rocksteady Studios and aimed to revive some features cut from the original release, including a storyline focused on one of the game’s companions. Despite this setback, there’s good news: a sequel is actively being developed by Avalanche Software.
Recent budget cuts by Warner Bros. Games include canceling the much-anticipated Wonder Woman game and closing three studios, one of which was Monolith Productions, the team behind Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. These decisions reflect the company’s ongoing efforts to trim costs, with recent layoffs at Rocksteady Studios being attributed to underwhelming performance from its live-service Suicide Squad game. The shakeup extends to the top levels, as the company reportedly plans to negotiate the departure of its president, David Haddad, later this year.
While the cancellation of Hogwarts Legacy’s additional content might be disappointing for fans, there is optimism for the sequel, which seems to remain on track. Warner Bros. Games has previously emphasized the importance of the fantasy franchise in its future plans, suggesting that their commitment to a Hogwarts Legacy follow-up appears strong.
