Netflix has just teased us with another glimpse of Squid Game’s second season, and while some elements are familiar, there’s plenty to surprise the fans.
With only about a month to go until the launch of the next season, Netflix has dropped a fresh trailer that finally lets us in on some of the new games awaiting the show’s participants. If you remember that eerie giant robot girl from the first season—the one where you had to freeze or risk getting shot—she’s back, and Seong Gi-hun returns to lead the new contestants through this chilling challenge, or at least he’s going to try.
Interestingly, the new season introduces some fresh twists, including games that divide players into X and O teams. It’s hard not to see this as a nod to societal divisions, possibly highlighting how the wealthy set the working class against each other. There’s even a game that involves a merry-go-round, adding to the intrigue. But above all, it seems Gi-hun is steering everyone towards a rebellion to put an end to these ruthless games once and for all.
Netflix released an official synopsis for season two: “Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is back, engaged in a tense face-off with the mysterious Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). As the games become more perilous, Gi-hun’s quest to terminate them takes precedence. Can he prevail, or will the system claim yet more victims?” Naturally, Lee is among the few returning cast members, alongside a wave of new faces, including a cheeky, purple-haired newcomer and a mother-son pair. Will they find themselves on opposing X and O teams?
The wait isn’t too long now, with the second season set to drop on Netflix on December 26.
