Microsoft is rolling out a fresh update for Windows 11 that brings a notable change to the Task Manager, specifically in the way it calculates CPU usage. This update aims to align Task Manager’s capabilities more closely with those of third-party applications, enhancing its performance monitoring utility.
In an effort to improve how performance data is presented, Microsoft seems to have recognized the limitations of Task Manager’s current metrics. Consequently, the new update will implement a revised method for measuring CPU usage, mirroring the approaches commonly used by other industry-standard tools. This enhancement promises to significantly boost the effectiveness of the Task Manager.
Microsoft recently stated, “We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.”
Although the precise mechanics of this update remain under wraps, it’s confirmed that CPU utilization calculations will now be standardized across various Task Manager pages such as Processes, Performance, and Users. This unified approach implies that the figures now visible via Task Manager will align closely with those on third-party apps. Essentially, this move should negate the need for external programs like HWINFO for accurate CPU monitoring. However, we’ll need to wait for the official release to experience these changes firsthand.
For those who still prefer the existing method of CPU calculation, Microsoft has thoughtfully introduced an optional feature. A new column named CPU Utility can be added on the “Details” tab, ensuring compatibility with the older system. These updates are included in the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360 and are slated to be part of the upcoming 24H2 update. While these changes will be gradually rolled out, it’s a positive step showing Microsoft’s commitment to delivering a seamless user experience.
