Matt Forbeck, a New York Times bestselling author and the creative mind behind the Marvel Multiverse RPG, has teamed up with his son, Marty, to bring a fresh tabletop experience into the Minecraft universe. Their latest creation, “Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper,” is now open for pre-orders. This new adventure aims to seamlessly blend the massive popularity of Minecraft with a straightforward set of role-playing rules, making it easily accessible for newcomers and seasoned adventurers alike.
Interestingly, Penguin Random House, the publisher, hasn’t revealed much about the game’s mechanics, a common approach when launching major tabletop games based on well-known intellectual properties. The book’s cover features two six-sided dice, and the listing mentions that it comes with “four dice.” Furthermore, the gamebook includes a removable character sheet and a handy rules reference to help track your heroic journey, ideal for solo adventurers or for guiding game masters, who are creatively dubbed “your narrator” in this context.
The story unfolds in a secluded village that’s under siege from “illagers,” a hostile group from the Minecraft world, known to readers of Forbeck’s 2020 novel, “Minecraft Dungeons: The Rise of the Arch-Illager.” Much like a classic Dungeons & Dragons campaign, players are tasked with aiding the besieged village by discovering and destroying the source of the threat—The Temple of the Charged Creeper.
While there have been previous crossovers between Minecraft and Dungeons & Dragons, such as the youthful adventure “Lightning Keep,” this particular quest stands alone as the brainchild of the Forbecks. Given Matt Forbeck’s extensive background, having designed games and penned novels for franchises like D&D, Minecraft, Halo, and Life is Strange, it’s no surprise that the lack of detailed information hasn’t deterred anticipation. Fans of Minecraft and tabletop games are eagerly waiting to see how this new venture will be received when it hits the shelves in July 2025.
