I’ve been completely absorbed by Monster Hunter Wilds ever since it launched a few weeks ago. My days are filled with trying to climb the ranks in those challenging high-rank zones, all while constantly debating over which snazzy new armor set to work towards. Right now, I’m in pursuit of the formidable Jin Dahaad, but I can’t shake the allure of that tough-as-nails Gravios armor—absolutely perfect for my hammer-wielding style. There’s no shortage of activities in Wilds, yet something feels absent.
What I truly miss is the joy of dressing up a piglet in funny costumes and tottering around with it in my arms, just like an oversized baby.
I’m talking about Monster Hunter’s lovable Poogie, the roly-poly, floppy-eared pig that’s become nearly as iconic as the series itself—right up there with the intimidating Rathalos. Poogies have held a special place in Monster Hunter history, and I fondly remember meeting my first one in Monster Hunter World’s bustling hub. There was this delightful ritual where you’d pet Poogie, and he’d respond with a cheerful tune while basking in your affection. Timing your button presses just right? Poogie would adore you! But miss the mark, and he’d scamper off, leaving you with an empty spot of lost companionship until your next quest ended.
Previously, a Poogie would roam around the central gathering areas, and showering him with attention before you embarked on a hunt was almost a rite of passage for superstitious players hoping it upped their chances of scoring those elusive monster treasures. Some players are convinced this is a hidden feature buried deep in the game’s code, but it’s never been officially confirmed.
However, Poogie wasn’t just a charm for luck! If you managed to win him over, previous versions allowed you to play dress-up with him, giving him adorable outfits. Who could resist a pig dressed up as a bumblebee? In Monster Hunter World, I loved cradling Poogie in my arms around the hub, waiting eagerly for my controller to buzz, signaling hidden treasure nearby. (TagBackTV has an excellent video that dives into the details of this!)
In Monster Hunter Wilds, you do encounter a Poogie, but not until chapter 3, and even then, he’s tucked away in a remote village I hardly ever visit unless required by specific quests. And while this Poogie has an adorable party trick—balancing a little round frog on its back—the interactions seem limited compared to previous titles. Gone are the quirky stripey pajamas and the woolly ram getup. Now I can only pet him and change his name.
With the announcement of the Title 1 update for Monster Hunter Wilds dropping next week, Capcom has teased the introduction of a dynamic gathering hub, a fresh alternative to the usual campsites in the Forbidden Lands. Their 12-minute preview hints at all sorts of exciting features and distractions within the new Grand Hub, including games and an expanded kitchen. (Personally, I’m thrilled about the possibility of the much-missed cooking cat, the Meowscular Chef, making a grand return.)
Yet, somehow, this new hub won’t feel quite like home unless there’s a little piggy I can scoop up for a cuddle. So, Capcom, here’s hoping you’ll give us fans what we truly desire!
