VR enthusiast and modder Holydh has unveiled the GTA: San Andreas Definitive Edition – 6DoF UEVR Plugin, enhancing the Steam version with VR capabilities. In a move that’s sure to delight fans, the plugin introduces PC VR support for the iconic game.
Back in August, Meta and Rockstar announced a delay in their Quest-focused Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR port, with no clear release in sight. This indefinite postponement put the onus on Rockstar’s passionate modding community to bring the classic game to life in VR. For many fans who hoped to experience memorable moments like Big Smoke’s famous fast food order in virtual reality, it was a significant letdown. The postponement added to a series of challenges faced by Rockstar and the broader GTA franchise, including substantial leaks, staff layoffs, and the rocky release of the remastered “Definitive Editions,” San Andreas included.
Holydh’s mod, however, goes beyond the basics. It’s not just about transplanting San Andreas’ traditional controls into a VR landscape. This adaptation introduces comprehensive first-person view, 6DOF motion controls, and refined camera angles for both gameplay and cinematic scenes. The mod leverages an advanced version of Praydog’s UEVR injector, a tool known for bringing VR support to a wide array of PC games crafted with Unreal Engine 4.8 or newer.
If you’re curious to see it in action, the mod doesn’t disappoint. For anyone eager to delve deeper, the Nexus Mods page offers more details, including insight into UEVR. It’s crucial for prospective users to note that this mod exclusively supports the Steam version of San Andreas Definitive Edition. Unfortunately, versions from the Epic Games Store or Rockstar Launcher won’t be compatible.
Legally, Rockstar has a history of being quite protective, as demonstrated by past actions against mods like the Luke Ross VR mod for GTA 5. However, Holydh is confident that his mod “should be alright.” Since it’s offered for free and the files used don’t directly belong to Rockstar, unlike the paid nature of the earlier Luke Ross mod, it seems less likely to face legal challenges.
