As a games journalist, I often find myself caught up in the whirlwind of every new release. If you’re anything like me, eagerly anticipating each fresh title, January presents a perfect opportunity to tackle that ever-growing backlog of games. During the Steam Winter Sale, I seized the chance to pick up a few titles from 2024 that slipped through my fingers, like Satisfactory, Trash Goblin, and even older gems like Firewatch and Dave the Diver. Late last year, I also got my hands on Tiny Glade and finally embarked on my initial playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3 in August.
Even though it’s now 2025, these games haven’t lost their shine one bit. In fact, there’s something uniquely rewarding about diving into older games; it’s like being welcomed into an exclusive club that always knew how brilliant Firewatch is. It’s similar to experiencing a timeless novel for the first time. So, if your backlog feels a bit overwhelming, why not start with the oldest game you own and work your way forward? Or, perhaps revisit a game you haven’t played in ages. There’s a certain joy in rekindling your love for a particular game, genre, or developer, regardless of the new blockbusters on their way. Who knows, in exploring these past treasures, you might just stumble upon your personal game of the year for 2025.
