The game development studio Pixelity, based in Korea, has exciting news for fans of classic anime. They’ve embarked on creating an XR game inspired by the iconic 1990s series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. According to Pixelity’s blog, they’ve secured an official license from Japan’s Studio Khara to bring this beloved series to life in a new way. The game will be released in three parts and follows the storyline of all 26 episodes from the anime. The first part is already in production and is slated for a 2026 release.
If you’re a fan of Evangelion, you’re well aware of its significance. This anime wasn’t just popular in Japan—it was a cultural cornerstone of the ’90s anime boom, influencing countless series that followed.
Set in the futuristic scenario of 2015, the plot revolves around Shinji Ikari, chosen to pilot the Evangelion—humankind’s last hope against the enigmatic Angels attacking Tokyo-3. As for which platforms will host the game, Pixelity has yet to disclose details. However, they promise that players can look forward to an immersive XR experience, engaging with the timeline and events of the original series, completing missions, and participating in thrilling battles.
The game will also introduce cooperative play, allowing interaction with Evangelion’s characters, a feature sure to appeal to longtime fans. Pixelity aims to deliver the excitement and adventure typically found in action-adventure games, offering players a dynamic gameplay experience.
Pixelity, established in 2017, has previously developed several VR titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also working on two other VR projects, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
While Evangelion has ventured into VR before, particularly with Bandai Namco’s collaborative project, Project i Can’s 2017 Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls—limited to sessions at VR ZONE in Shinjuku—this marks the first official home-based game adaptation for the series. Fans are undoubtedly eager to see how Pixelity will reimagine this legendary anime for the XR platform.
