It’s looking like another promising game might have been shelved, and this time it’s Project G.G. from PlatinumGames, a title that gave off some seriously cool Ultra Man vibes. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much in the way of updates since its early announcement.
Cast your mind back to 2020—if you can recall it—when Project G.G. first made headlines. But let’s be real, not much more surfaced after that big reveal. To add to the uncertainty, director Hideki Kamiya, one of PlatinumGames’ co-founders, parted ways with the company at the close of 2023. Naturally, this sparked quite a few questions about the game’s fate. Now, it seems almost certain that it won’t see the light of day. If you hop over to PlatinumGames’ website, you’ll notice they showcase 10 of their games. These include heavy-hitters like the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, as well as their recent announcement, Ninja Gaiden 4.
Interestingly, a peek at the past through the Wayback Machine reveals a once longer list counting 22 titles, including partnerships on games like Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and The Legend of Korra. Classics they developed solo, like Madworld, and the unfortunate flop Babylon’s Fall, all still have their web presence. Project G.G., however, has vanished entirely—with its page redirecting visitors straight back to the main site, thanks to PlatinumGames discreetly sweeping it off their digital space (a tip of the hat to Eurogamer for pinpointing this).
It’s pretty much waving a white flag on the game ever launching. Seeing as Kamiya hasn’t clocked in for over a year now, it’s not wholly unexpected. There’s been some significant reshuffling within the company’s ranks lately. Still, the announcement of the new Ninja Gaiden indicates that PlatinumGames is keeping its doors open for now.
