ROBOBEAT, crafted by Simon Fredholm in collaboration with Kwalee, brings a high-energy blend of roguelike and rhythm shooter to the PlayStation 5. Dive into our detailed review of this exhilarating game!
In ROBOBEAT, you step into the boots of the renowned bounty hunter Ace. You’re on a mission to track down the flamboyant robot showman, Frazzer. This chase takes you into his bizarre techno-infused playground, where everything—yes, everything—happens to the beat of an electrifying soundtrack. Standing still is simply not an option as you’ll need to keep moving to stay alive! The game keeps you on your toes with procedurally generated levels, requiring you to continuously adjust your tactics as you advance. Picking a song that matches your rhythm is key to enhancing your gameplay experience!
Having dabbled with other rhythm-based FPS games like Metal: Hellsinger on PS5 and BPM: Bullets Per Minute on the Nintendo Switch, my interest was piqued to see how ROBOBEAT measures up on the PS5. Interestingly, this game has some crossover elements, offering songs from BPM: Bullets Per Minute, DUSK, and ULTRAKILL as bonus features.
Once you start playing, the controls become second nature. Use the left analog stick to move your character around, and the right to aim. A quick dash is at your fingertips with a press of the left analog stick. Need to jump? Hit the X button for a leap or a double jump, and slide with the Circle button. Feeling aerial? Perform a ground slam by pressing in on the right stick mid-jump. In combat, the L2 and R2 buttons fire your left and right weapons, respectively. Sync your shots with the game’s beat to rack up combos. Don’t forget to parry with Square, charge weapons with Triangle, and use the R1 button for utilities in your loadout.
When it comes to the arsenal at your disposal, you have quite the selection to unleash chaos on foes daring to get in your way. The trusty Revolver delivers swift attacks with a short cooldown, while a well-aimed headshot can land you a critical hit. For shotgun enthusiasts, the Flux offers impressive damage up close with its two-beat cooldown. The Contact lets you spread the hurt to nearby enemies with good damage output from a one-beat cooldown. Or mix things up with the Ping Pong; every third shot in a sequence detonates with an explosion, also sporting a one-beat cooldown.
Every battle and room clearance earns you Blips—your essential in-game currency. Spend these to upgrade weapons, unlock rooms, and enhance your capabilities for future runs. Whether it’s stocking up in the shop room, scoring a power-up in the data-chip room, testing your skills in the parkour room, or facing the frenetic target rush room, you’ll need to find and return the corresponding blueprints to open these crucial areas in the game.
Trophy hunters will find plenty to aim for with a full Platinum trophy list in ROBOBEAT. With a total of 24 Bronze trophies, 8 Silver trophies, and 5 Gold trophies, there’s a substantial challenge awaiting you. You’ll find yourself exploring new areas, collecting keys, visiting various rooms, vanquishing bosses, pulling off multiple parries, and more tasks to achieve that elusive Platinum.
ROBOBEAT offers a frenetic, rhythm-infused FPS experience where you navigate a world unlike any other, all while keeping in sync with an exhilarating soundtrack. With procedurally generated levels, the game never plays out the same way twice, making adaptability a must. Complementing its 38-song playlist are extra tracks from BPM: Bullets Per Minute, DUSK, and ULTRAKILL. The game hits the PlayStation 5 tomorrow, priced at $19.99.
In a nutshell, ROBOBEAT is a pulsating journey through a techno-heavenly chaos crafted by Simon Fredholm and Kwalee that challenges both your reflexes and your sense of rhythm. Are you ready to take down Frazzer, the eccentric robot-showman, and rise to the rhythm-infused challenge?
