Rumor has it that Ubisoft, the well-known French gaming publisher, is gearing up to launch a new battle royale game designed to compete with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this game, internally referred to as “Scout,” shares a strong resemblance to Apex Legends, to the extent that its initial artwork was once used as a preliminary design for the project. It’s also said that Scout features characters quite similar to those in Apex Legends, and has been under development for quite some time now.
The idea behind this move is reportedly Ubisoft’s belief that it can attract players from Apex Legends. Electronic Arts, the publisher behind Apex, has admitted that the game has been experiencing a financial downtrend. An insider mentioned, “The aim seems to be to take advantage of Apex’s dropping player numbers, with Ubisoft executives thinking there’s space for a new hero-based Battle Royale in the market.”
It’s important to note that this isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt to break into the free-to-play battle royale scene. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, but unfortunately, the game was discontinued after just 18 months. This latest development coincides with the company also ending its free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends can look forward to a 2.0 version of the game, which is expected to be released sometime after April 2026.
