Square Enix seems to be in high spirits about their progress on the third installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, as noted by one of their senior officials. This optimistic update came during a recent briefing on how things are going with the follow-up to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Work on this final chapter kicked off in June of 2022, and it wasn’t long after the February 2024 release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth that the project was in full swing. Since then, Square Enix has been occasionally offering glimpses into how this major RPG is shaping up.
In keeping with these updates, key figures like producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi recently talked with Famitsu, a well-known Japanese media outlet, about the current state of the project. Hamaguchi expressed confidence in the team’s progress, confirming that development is on track and hasn’t faced major hurdles. However, they’re still keeping mum on when exactly we might expect this exciting sequel to drop.
During the same conversation, Kitase reaffirmed that the story of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 was all wrapped up back in 2024. Hamaguchi had previously spilled the beans in November 2024, letting fans know that the narrative was locked in. Now, Kitase also shared his enthusiasm for how it has all come together, suggesting it will resonate well with fans while stopping short of revealing too much.
The predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, took about five years of active development, excluding the earlier stages. By contrast, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth wrapped up in just about four years, likely because Square Enix reused some elements from the original remake. This quickened pace might have been even faster if not for the clashes with pandemic-related setbacks in 2020.
Looking ahead, it seems well within the realm of possibility that this final installment could land as early as 2027. If history repeats itself, we might see it first as a PlayStation exclusive, much like its predecessors, before it expands to PC and perhaps additional platforms. Notably, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth made its PC debut today, January 23, expanding its reach beyond just console players.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth introduces players to an expansive world, marking the second chapter in a fresh take on the iconic RPG. The team of heroes, including Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith, and Red XIII, have made their escape from the bustling, dystopian Midgar and are now on a mission to find Sephiroth. This entry is tailored to be accessible to newcomers even if they haven’t experienced the first remake or the PS original, featuring engaging gameplay mechanics and a richly developed world. The game hit the shelves for PS5 on February 29, 2024, and awaited its PC release a year later on January 23, 2025.
