Google introduces Android XR
This week delivered one of the most groundbreaking announcements of the year: Google unveiled Android XR, a dedicated operating system set to power the next-generation XR devices, from mixed reality headsets to AR glasses. The first device to embrace this platform is the Project Moohan headset, a collaborative venture with Samsung and Qualcomm. Not to be left behind, other tech giants like XREAL, Sony, and Lynx are also gearing up to release Android XR-compatible devices. During a closed demo, Google showcased Android XR’s capabilities across its custom headset and smart glasses. The real game-changer here is the integration of their Gemini AI, which offers remarkable features such as translating live conversations through smart glasses and providing real-time information overlaid on your view. While incredibly useful, it does raise some concerns about privacy. The OS also includes stunning functionalities like converting 2D photos and videos into 3D, using various input methods like voice or hand gestures. Exciting content additions like Google’s G-suite and games such as Demeo mark only the beginning, with more set to follow. Developers can now access a preview environment for native, Unity, and WebXR development. Although details on Project Moohan are scant, its blend of Quest Pro and Apple Vision Pro features like an external battery and high-definition displays make it highly anticipated. Google’s entry into this arena brings a much-needed validation and competition to the XR field, which can only benefit us all. Let’s hope it doesn’t meet a premature end in Google’s infamous project graveyard.

Quest’s latest update enhances hand tracking and Windows 11 pairing
Meta has rolled out the runtime v72 for Quest devices, bringing some noteworthy improvements. Hand tracking has been upgraded to version 2.3, enhancing responsiveness even in confined environments like travel mode. The introduction of Windows Mixed Reality Link means that after an initial setup, Quest 3 and 3S users can seamlessly interact with their Windows 11 PC, much in the way Apple’s Vision Pro interfaces with Mac. Plus, it opens the door to using your computer’s vast capabilities on a virtual screen within the headset. New additions include a Media Gallery app for media enjoyment and a boundary-free entry into your VR home environment. Meta has also made smaller updates, like integrating direct Instagram messages. Personally, I’m most excited about the Windows 11 connectivity feature, which mirrors Mac’s integration with Vision Pro.

Omdia predicts a dip for XR in 2025
The analyst firm Omdia has shared a report hinting at challenging times for the XR market, noting a 10% drop in headset sales in 2024 and predicting similar trends in 2025, with recovery not expected until 2026. While the report paints a bleak immediate future, I remain optimistic, as the industry has shown signs of growth since 2023 with successes like the Ray-Ban Meta and the release of Android XR. It’s all about perspective, I suppose.
