Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios revealed the much-anticipated launch date for “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic.” Gamers can mark their calendars for June 13th, when it will be available on both PS5 and PC. The buzz, however, surrounds the sudden absence of any reference to PSVR 2 support, which has left fans both curious and concerned.
The intrigue began at PAX West 2024, where attendees got a taste of what seemed to be a VR-flatscreen hybrid of “FNAF: Secret of the Mimic” during a playable demo on PSVR 2. This had set the stage for a fully immersive experience from the XR experts at Steel Wool Studios.
It’s worth noting that Steel Wool Studios, with a $5 million investment from HTC early on, has been a frontrunner in the VR gaming world since it was established in 2012. The studio is known for VR-centric titles like “Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue” (2023) and both “FNAF: Help Wanted” (2019) and its 2024 sequel.
When the recent announcement of the release date rolled out, keen-eyed observers noticed something off. References to PSVR 2 were conspicuously missing from marketing materials and the official PlayStation Store page, which once hinted at VR support but now doesn’t mention it at all. This change was hinted at in an official PlayStation post that has been taken down since its initial mention on February 12th.
Steel Wool Studios has yet to comment on whether PSVR 2 support will feature down the line. Similarly, there’s no word on whether the PC releases on Epic Games Store and Steam will eventually incorporate VR features.
As we wait for an official statement from Steel Wool Studios, the gaming community is left in speculation. Is this a sign of a postponed VR mode launch, or perhaps an entirely different release strategy? We’re actively pursuing answers and will provide updates as soon as we have concrete information.
